Cruz, Trump Fight Heats Up
Out of all the candidates in the race, the two people that you could expect to not let a comment slide the most hands down are Donald Trump and Senator Ted Cruz. Both candidates, no matter who you support, are indisputably the most willing to say semi controversial statements or push a theme a little too far. Trump, obviously, made his political career around these statements, while Cruz has aired attack ads that leave many with their jaws dropped. So, the combination of these two against each other, has created more drama and entertainment than a soap opera.
In case you have not heard what happened, a pro Cruz PAC put out an advertisement in Utah (a mormon majority state) which showed Melania Trump, Donald’s third wife, in her racy GQ spread where it is easy to imagine what she looks like with no clothes on. Trump hit back with a tweet of his wife looking perfectly manicured next to a picture of Heidi Cruz, Ted’s wife, looking disheveled. While Senator Ted Cruz stated that he knew nothing of the pro Cruz PAC’s plan to air the ad, Trump wrote in a tweet, “Lyin’ Ted Cruz denied that he had anything to do with the G.Q. model photo post of Melania. That’s why we call him Lyin’ Ted!” Trump then said, rather threatening, that he would “spill the beans” on his wife. This did not sit well with many women, especially those women who already hate Donald Trump.
Many have come to Heidi Cruz’s. An author in National Review wrote a piece that said after Trump’s attack on Heidi, it was clear he would be “rooting for Heidi Cruz. And her husband.” Cruz said to Trump, “leave my wife the hell alone,” as this feud heated up. And now, a story has come out in the tabloids that state Cruz has had many affairs on his wife-five in total. Cruz quickly posted this statement on Facebook:
“I want to be crystal clear: these attacks are garbage. For Donald J. Trump to enlist his friends at the National Enquirer and his political henchmen to do his bidding shows you that there is no low Donald won’t go.
These smears are completely false, they’re offensive to Heidi and me, they’re offensive to our daughters, and they’re offensive to everyone Donald continues to personally attack.
Donald Trump’s consistently disgraceful behavior is beneath the office we are seeking and we are not going to follow.”
Trump tweeted back to the controversy surrounding this, “I didn’t start the fight with Lyin’Ted Cruz over the GQ cover pic of Melania, he did. He knew the PAC was putting it out – hence, Lyin’ Ted!”
This fight, however, is far from over. Both Cruz and Trump are not ones to waive the white flag, and both believe the other is in the wrong for the treatment of their wife. For Cruz supporters, this is a perfect example of Trump’s vile ways to attack families of his enemies, and show how low he will go to make sure he wins. For Trump’s supporters, it was Cruz who started the fight in the first place, with the intention of showing Melania in a disrespectful way. Both Trump and Cruz went to the defense of their wives, and now, both are using this fight as a way to take down the other.
As we turn into Wisconsin, it is hard to say which candidate will come out for the better from this. It is not the first time that Trump has been called sexist and still won a primary. And it is not the first time Cruz has been depicted of using dirty politics in a campaign video to degrade another candidate.
It is hard to imagine when the Republican Party will ever again be able to get along. This primary has proved itself to be one of the hardest and most aggressive that many can remember. In a time when the Party is so fragile, one wonders how much more it can take.
