Who is Carly Fiorina?
Carly Fiorina has never held public office, but she thinks that her background is enough to run for president. This Republican emerged on the scenes at CPAC, and has slowly been building her base to be a viable candidate for 2016. So, who is Carly Fiorina?
Fiorina’s most notable achievement is that she was the first woman to shatter the glass ceiling when she became CEO of Hewlett-Packard, a Fortune 50020company. She was forced to resign after a three year tenure, and has been described as one of “the worst CEO’s of all time.” However, she merged with Compaq, Hewlett-Packard’s competitor, and under her leadership made HP the largest computer manufacturer. The company also was inflicted by the dot com bubble burst, and she has written books and given many speeches about her leadership in defense to negative accusations. She is a strong advocate for women in the workplace and for women holding leadership positions in big companies. As she worked her way up to be CEO, she is a strong example of this possibility.
After her time at HP, she was an advisor for John McCain in his 2008 presidential race. She then ran for California Senate, losing to Senator Boxer. Now, she is running for President. While she may get the woman vote, she is against abortion and against gay marriage, which will alienate the more socially liberal Republicans. Furthermore, those against big corporations have criticized her job cuts while CEO, and her strong association with those companies who are “out of touch” with the working class.
Fiorina, if anything, will gain more name recognition as well as the potential VP slot. She will need a cohesive, effective campaign that shows how her past will provide the leadership needed for the future. While the woman card is strong, Hillary Clinton is stronger. In any case, it is positive that a woman candidate is running for the GOP, and will open the door to more women who seek the same office.
