Christie Steps Back
Governor Chris Christie sent a formal letter today to drop an appeal he sent to the Supreme Court on the ruling of same-sex marriage. He dropped this request this morning and his office issued a statement saying, “Although the Governor strongly disagrees with the Court substituting its judgment for the constitutional process of the elected branches or a vote of the people, the Court has now spoken clearly as to their view of the New Jersey Constitution and, therefore, same-sex marriage is the law.” Governor Christie, as he is faced with an upcoming election in his state, was most likely torn. For 2014, he would win more votes by allowing same sex marriage, but for the much talked about 2016 election he would lose the Republican base through not fighting this law. States around the country are faced with the decision to legalize same sex marriage, and many have already done so. This topic will most likely be a hot issue in the upcoming 2014 elections.
