Senate Republicans met this afternoon to make one thing clear: Republicans need to attack Obamacare, not one another. In a closed-door meeting, the caucus went over tactics on how to keep the government in operation while also defunding Obamacare. Senator Johnson said that Republicans need to refocus on the negative effects of Obamacare, and not disagree over senate tactics. Senator Cruz and Senator Lee do not want Republicans to end the debate on the CR, which would allow Senator Reid to strip the defunding of Obamacare and send the CR back to the House. Other Republicans want to offer amendments to the CR, and that Reid should allow votes on these. Senator McConnell does not want to send the CR back to the House with limited time to make changes. Senator Reid has said that if the House wants to change back the funding bill to defund Obamacare, it would be a “sure-fire way to shut down the government.” The Democrats remain strong that they will not defund this law, and that if the House and Republican senators continue to do this then the blame will be on them.
