Democrat Leadership Responds to Boehner
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid gave a press conference in response to Speaker John Boehner where he wanted to make on thing crystal clear: Any bill that defunds Obamacare is dead. This CR is turning into a chicken fight. The Republicans on the far right view the CR as their last attempt to defund Obamacare, and Tea Party members, such as Senator Ted Cruz, evoked Winston Churchill in the extreme he will go to fight against the ACA. Senator Harry Reid said that the House passing a budget that defunds Obamacare is a waste of time, and the writing on the wall is clear to everyone. He is unsure why this group of extreme members are toying with such an important bill. Reid said that if the government shuts down, the effects across America will be absolutely devastating. The United States Chamber of Commerce wrote a letter to every lawmaker yesterday, urging the members to do anything they could to avoid a shutdown. The Democrat leadership said that this shows the seriousness of the issue, for they normally take sides with the Republicans on fiscal issues. Senator Reid said more Republicans are speaking out on the senate side, such as Senator Portman and Senator Burr who think that playing these political games with the budget is unwise. Senator Charles Schumer, also part of the press conference, said that in his thirty years in Washington, he has never seen a group more extreme than the Tea Party. He finds it unfortunate that the keys to the Republican party have been taken by the far right extremists, and that you can tell in Speaker Boehner and Leader Cantor’s body language that they know this approach to the CR is wrong. He said that Democrats are united, and Republicans are not. The leadership said they are ready to meet with Republicans in the middle on how to reduce the deficit, raise the debt limit, and increase America’s economy. By playing double dare with the senate, however, a government shutdown seems unavoidable.
